Recent Worker Wins

Workers like you throughout the University system are organizing department based committees to address worker concerns and plan strategically to further our interests as workers. By getting involved you have an opportunity to address issues felt by yourself and many others such as wages, staffing, etc.

Through collective action, we've recently won the following!

  • HMHI: Worker organizing committee secured assistance for employees’ vehicles that were vandalized.
  • Main: Nutrition hiring freeze lifted after department-wide petition.
  • HCI: manager replaced after workers threaten a ‘sick-out.’
  • System-wide: Union members successfully gathered thousands of signatures for a petition and acquired parking stipends and an increased sick allowance for all workers.

Union events

We hold weekly trainings to teach you the skill of organizing. Reach out to [email protected]

Our hospital made $370 Million more in 2024 than it did in 2023. Where is the money going?

You and your coworkers increased hospital income by $370 Million dollars in 2024.*1

  • This is enough to give every employee a bonus of over $15,000. *2
  • This is enough to hire at least 4000 HCAs. *3
  • This is enough to hire at least 2000 nurses.*4

How could your daily life change if even half of this $370 million was invested in the workers like you who made it possible? We deserve to know how this money is going to be spent, and to have input on this decision. This hospital works because we do.

If we as workers want a say in how the money we make for the hospital is used, we need to band together, and get organized. See this pocket newsletter for information on getting involved.

All estimations were intentionally kept conservative.

  1. “In FY24, net patient services revenue totaled $3.8 billion, an increase of $370.2 million, or 10.9%, from the $3.4 billion in FY23” - 2024 UofU financial report.
  2. U of U says there are 24,000 hospital employees. $370 Million divided by 24,000 employees = $15,416 per employee.
  3. We checked Transparent Utah: It is hard to find an HCA whose total compensation, after benefits, is above $80,000. $370 Million divided by $80,000 total compensation = 4625 HCAs.
  4. We checked Transparent Utah: It is hard to find a nurse whose total compensation, after benefits, is above $150,000. $370 Million divided by $150,000 total compensation = 2466 nurses.
